He now practices repentance, which is not confessing to any being on the outside of yourself but making a decision within yourself to change radically your way of thinking; to change radically your attitude towards another who displeases you and represent him to yourself as one who pleases you, and persuade yourself that what you now perceive is true. For if imagining creates reality and I practice repentance, which is only a radical change of mind, I will take anything that displeases me and then change it mentally. Then persuade myself of the reality of the change, expecting it to simply mold itself in harmony with what I’m doing in my mind’s eye. And it can come through a man or a woman or a group who will now bear witness to my repentance. For, as I have changed my attitude toward them, they must change their attitude toward me. We loved him, we are told. Why?—because he first loved us. So it always starts with self. I want them to be some way different, well then, I must start it first. I want them to be loving toward me and mine, well then, I must start to act and I must initiate it. As I do it, I am practicing repentance—for “Now the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of heaven is at hand; repent, and believe the gospel.” And this gentleman has certainly seriously been practicing repentance in his business life, his family life, his social life, from all the letters that I have received from him. It is no wonder he could now take the yoke that kept that stiff-necked being along the road where he would not listen to the Word of God.926 ¶19
