The Mesopotamian tradition (Sumerian, Babylonian, Assyrian; c. 3000 BCE–1st c. CE) —
the origin of the **sexagesimal** (base-60) number system, the 360° circle, the
zodiac, the numeric divine name-list, and the first mathematical, *predictive*
astronomy. Of every tradition in this corpus its "sacred mathematics" is the most
genuinely mathematical: cuneiform tablets record sophisticated algebra and astronomy
centuries before the Greeks. It is also, per the number-7 pilot, the plausible
arithmetical birthplace of seven's mystique.
Mesopotamian scribal culture bequeathed measuring conventions still in use (60 minutes, 360°) and produced, in the later first millennium BCE, mathematical astronomy able to *predict* lunar and planetary phenomena. Number was woven into religion: the great gods carried numbers (Anu 60, Enlil 50, Ea/Enki 40, Sîn 30, Šamaš 20, Ištar 15); the cosmos was sevenfold ("the heavens are seven, the earths are seven"); and the ziggurat rose in stages as a bond between heaven and earth.
Era (prose)
Early Dynastic–Seleucid (c. 3000 BCE–1st c. CE); mathematical astronomy flourishes c. 500–100 BCE
Region (prose)
Tigris–Euphrates (Sumer, Akkad, Babylonia, Assyria — modern Iraq)

Body
Base-60 place-value arithmetic, the 360° circle, the 12-fold zodiac and the seven "planets" are Mesopotamian legacies transmitted to Greek and later astronomy.
