Mesopotamian scribal culture bequeathed measuring conventions still in use (60
minutes, 360°) and produced, in the later first millennium BCE, mathematical
astronomy able to *predict* lunar and planetary phenomena. Number was woven into
religion: the great gods carried numbers (Anu 60, Enlil 50, Ea/Enki 40, Sîn 30,
Šamaš 20, Ištar 15); the cosmos was sevenfold ("the heavens are seven, the earths
are seven"); and the ziggurat rose in stages as a bond between heaven and earth.
