Two mathematical strands matter here. First, **ritual geometry**: building the fire
altars (agnicayana) to exact shapes and areas required the geometric rules collected
in the Śulba Sūtras (c. 800–500 BCE), including a statement of the "Pythagorean"
relation and area-preserving transformations of figures. Second, **cosmic
numerology**: the Veda structures the cosmos by number — Agni's threefold nature and
the three worlds, the Saptarṣi (seven sages) and sapta sindhavaḥ (seven rivers), the
twelve Ādityas, and (in the later Siddhāntic astronomy) the yuga spans built on
432,000.
