In a night vision Neville saw a hairy gorilla-like monster calling a radiant heavenly female creature "Mother"; he struck and pummelled it and it gloated on the violence, until he realised both were his own creations — the monster fed by his every misused violent moment and the beautiful one by his loving thoughts — and when he pledged himself to redeem it even if it took eternity, the monster shrank and dissolved, its energy returning to him and the heavenly creature glowing.
