He recalls that in Barbados, where his family were always in business, the wives of some of the richest families on the island were kleptomaniacs who would pocket small things like apples; the clerks would tell his brothers, nothing was said, the husband was quietly billed and paid, and one such sweet, cultured lady he remembers vividly had to be invited to dinner with everything nailed down.
