This past week he bought Wednesday's New York Times, whose front page reported that Russia had at last revealed a fantastic robbery of a jewelled sword from a museum a year earlier — the same plot as the film he had seen a month before. The unnamed film is Topkapi (Jules Dassin, 1964): a comedy set in Greece and Turkey in which a gang steals a jewelled blade from a heavily guarded Istanbul museum, is caught and jailed, and — in the closing scene, the woman whose idea it was calling through the bars to the men in prison garb — turns to the jewels of a Russian museum she knows a secret way into. Neville saw it about a month before the lecture, which places the outing in October 1964. He remembered the object as a sword; in the film it is the jewelled dagger of the Topkapi Palace. The identification is made here from the description alone; the New York Times report of Wednesday 11 November 1964 has not been checked against an archive.
