In his twenties during the Depression he would walk from his hotel on 49th Street up to Columbus Circle to hear the soap-box speakers; one night, penniless, he took the platform from a man ranting that there is no God, spoke of knowing God exists, drew voices of agreement out of the silent crowd, and on stepping down found a ten dollar bill at his heel, which he kept by challenging anyone to give its serial number.
