Neville recounts a vision in which he stood on a very tall ladder with all the wild animals of the forest moving angrily at its foot; realising he was in vision he lost his fear, whereupon the animals grew tame, and when he arrested the feeling in his head that animated them they became as still and dead as waxworks — proving to him that animals are externalised emotional states of man.
