While still living in New York City, before he came out West in 1956, Neville found himself fulfilling the 42nd Psalm — leading an enormous throng towards the invisible house of God, when a voice said 'And God walks with them', a woman beside him laughed and asked 'You mean Neville is God?', and the voice answered 'Yes, in the act of waking'; then he felt the five vortices of the crucifixion in his body as sheer ecstasy.
