The night before the lecture Neville spent seven hours in vision among his friends living and dead, all young and restored, including his brother Lawrence, the doctor who had died not quite two years before, who invited him to the beach for a swim; every time he closed his eyes he went straight back in, so at five in the morning he got up, made tea and read his Bible.
