When he first came to California, Neville and his wife visited an ardent Catholic family's home with a pool; her warning was that as a Protestant he was damned but could still enjoy himself, and the family's three boys, all wearing St. Christopher medals, each came back from the war maimed - one deaf, one without a foot, one without an arm, and another with TB - yet credited the medals with saving them.
