Coming out of the army in 1943 he and his wife looked for an apartment; the rent was higher than the sum they had fixed on, but he persisted in his imagined figure, and in the third month the manager apologised and reduced the rent retroactively to exactly the amount he had chosen - meanwhile the higher rent had won them their choice of wallpaper, paint and a wall-length bookshelf; they stayed almost fourteen years.
