On waking that morning Neville met his recently dead friend Al Olstrom in a railroad station, unchanged, having a snack; he recounts how Al died suddenly at sixty-four after going over seventeen items with his wife Muriel, and how Al, a Swede who worked for Standard Oil of California, enjoyed Neville's social company but would never accept his teaching.
