Drafted into the Army in November 1942 and sent to Camp Polk, Louisiana, Neville applied for discharge and was refused by his colonel; he then slept each night imagining himself back in his Washington Square apartment with his wife and baby daughter, saw in a 4 a.m. vision a hand strike out 'disapproved' and write 'Approved' while a voice said to do nothing, and nine days later the same colonel called him in and told him to submit a new application, on which he was honorably discharged - and his 13 weeks' training earned him his American citizenship.
