In February 1941, when a snowstorm cut his usual New York audience of a thousand down to a hundred on the night his book Your Faith Is Your Fortune came out, he went to sleep assuming he was in his mother's home in Barbados; seven months later a cable came saying his mother was dying, and he and his wife sailed for Barbados instead of taking their planned Maine vacation.
