As a child in a Christian home he was beaten bloody in a Bible class by a sadistic headmaster for being unable to produce a Bible to verify the correctly quoted 'Take up thy bed and walk' (the master's Bible said 'couch'); his father had to be restrained by neighbours from killing the man and took him out of the school next day; the headmaster shot himself that year.
