As a boy in Barbados he and three brothers rode a gig behind a huge jack donkey to their grandmother's every Sunday; she gave each a coin, and he spent his penny every time paying a man to race ahead on a female donkey, so that he alone always came home with nothing, and his mother told him he would never have anything because he gave everything away.
