Asked what determines the individual awakening, Neville answers from his own life: born and raised in a Christian home and taught that Jesus Christ was another being, he never suspected the truth and no one taught it to him; then on a very simple day, wholly unexpected, it happened to him — he woke in his skull, pushed out at its base, saw all the nativity symbolism, and came back bewildered, still remembering his own mistakes over his sixty years and unable to say why God's selective love fell on him.
