To settle the argument Neville asked the hostess for a Bible; without his glasses — being 'pushing sixty' — he could not read the fine print, could not use one gentleman's offered glasses, but a second, apparently older, gentleman's magnifying glasses fitted perfectly, and he read Luke 23:46 aloud.
