Neville describes an experience in which he arrested an activity within himself and the whole scene froze — a waitress carrying food, a man lifting soup to his mouth, a bird in flight that stayed suspended, falling leaves that fell no further — everything as though made of clay; when he released the activity all of them completed their intended motions.
