Neville recounts his mother's death in 1941, about a month before Pearl Harbor: he had just returned to New York from three weeks with her in Barbados, where she was a terminal cancer case, and sitting in his living room he saw her as a beautiful blonde girl of twenty under an arbor brushing her hair, and she would not speak to him; he wrote his sister that mother had recovered, but the letter that came back showed it was the exact hour, allowing for the time difference, that she died.
