Neville recounts the first time he arrested the action: in spirit, with his body on the bed, he came upon a New England restaurant scene of about a hundred and fifty years earlier, stilled an activity in his own brain so that everything — a boy eating, a waitress, a bird, falling leaves, waving grass — froze like clay, examined them, then released the activity and everything moved on.
