Neville describes his first taste of the Power: he was taken in spirit into a New England restaurant of about 150 years earlier, and by arresting the activity within himself he stopped the whole scene — a bird in flight, falling leaves, the waitress, a young diner's spoon halfway to his mouth — then released it and everything resumed, proving to him that all he beheld was within his own imagination.
