From around age seven, Neville underwent a slow-building inner separation -- an experience he could describe at first only as feeling like 'a stormy ocean' -- in which he sensed himself as both an individual, Neville, and a larger 'It'. This continued for five years until, at twelve, he felt himself 'torn apart'; he says he did not understand it differently, or 'lift that being out', until he was twenty-one. He credits growing up remote on Barbados, far from any psychoanalyst who might have interfered, with letting the experience unfold undisturbed.
