A month before this lecture Neville visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see Rembrandt's 'Aristotle contemplating the head of Homer', and while there saw crucifixion paintings in the same gallery which, from his own experience of the drama, he judged to be wrongly depicted — wrong side for the stigmata, nails and a wooden cross instead of vortices and a tree, and sad faces instead of ecstasy.
