Before Neville's Barbados trip, Abdullah told him he would 'have died' by the time he returned. After three ascetic months with his family over Christmas, on the ten-day voyage north he broke seven years of vegetarianism, sobriety and celibacy in a single dinner aboard ship, understanding afterward that a state of consciousness, not himself, had died.
