Exodus 23:19, 'Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk', which the literal-minded obey by never taking milk with meat, read psychologically: the kid, the symbol of sacrifice, is a former state one has mothered and now gives up, and the milk is one's attention, which nurses and keeps alive whatever holds it. Having assumed the new state, one must not look back and give the old one attention, or one steeps the kid again in its mother's milk.
