The ascent is by the effort a man makes through faith - yet ninety per cent of what he receives comes not by his effort but by grace, and a maximum of ten per cent by his own. You have no conception how much is given to man: your effort is always multiplied a thousandfold, so make it and be amazed at the gift that comes. God is not here to punish or to get even; the whole of it is the awakening of God in man.
