Matthew 22:42-45. No one dared ask him where his son was - and a child is what bears witness to fatherhood - so he raised the question himself: what think ye of the Christ, whose son is he? They answered from tradition, the son of David. Then why did David in the spirit call him Lord, and if David thus calls him Lord, how could he be David's son? Neville notes that the word rendered Lord is Adoni, which every child used of a parent - my father, my lord - so the question resolves the other way round: the Christ is not David's son but David's father, which fulfils the 89th Psalm, 'thou art my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation'. The conclusion he draws is the whole of his late teaching: everyone is destined to be the father of David, and being the father of David they are Jesus Christ, without losing their own individuality.
