Galatians 3:1 turned on the reader by way of the dictionary. To portray, Neville reminds his audience, is to depict in a drawing or a painting, or in a verbal description, or as an action on a stage. If the crucifixion was publicly portrayed, then what the eye saw was a play, and the error Paul rebukes is the audience's and not the actor's: Are you so foolish? Having begun with the Spirit, are you ending with the flesh? The illustration is the theatre - a man shot on stage goes home afterwards and has the most wonderful time, yet the audience sitting there weeps as though he had really been shot. So the whole vast world has fallen victim to believing in the flesh of Jesus, unable to discriminate between the thought depicted and the actor depicting the thought. Kept apart from its parent, which teaches that you are the actor and not the part you play: this one is about the spectator who mistakes the play for history, and it is always carried by the Galatians sentence rather than by Shakespeare's.
