The Sadducees' trap and the answer Neville builds a doctrine on. Moses' levirate law says that if a man dies without issue his brother must marry the widow to raise up seed for him; so they put the case of seven brothers who married the same woman in turn and all died childless, and then she died - whose wife will she be in the resurrection? It is a bait, because they do not believe in the resurrection at all. The answer refuses the premise: you do not know the scriptures; the sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, but those accounted worthy to attain to that age, to the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage, for they cannot die again, for now they are sons of God and sons of the resurrection. Neville's gloss turns on a distinction he states flatly and repeats: survival is continuity, resurrection is discontinuity - you leave the field completely and enter the world of eternity - and the world constantly puts the two words together as though they were one thing. Those raised are completely above the organisation of sex, and the garments of sex worn here are shadows thrown by that being above; imagination is fully awake there, so an imaginal act is an immediate objective fact and no other kind of creativity is needed. He identifies the Sadducees with the modern scientists - the intellectual giants of their day, who could not believe even in survival, far less resurrection - while the Pharisees were the priesthood.
