The sentence Neville uses to close off every attempt to qualify for the kingdom in advance, and it is aimed at named opponents: the priesthoods of the world scare us to death trying to make us conform to their concept of what a man ought to be in order to enter. His answer is the inversion. Fitness for the kingdom of heaven is the consequence, not the condition, of his glory - you could be the most unclean being in the world, judged by human standards, but God calls us according to his purpose, and only God knows that you are not fitted; you are fitted by reason of his call. When he calls you he incorporates you into his body, and that incorporation is what fits you. The argument never changes: you cannot earn it in eternity, and because you cannot earn it, it is given; were it your due then it is not a gift, and it is not given as a reward. At 59 the gift is what does the fitting - the minute he gives you himself, you are fitted for the kingdom, and you wear the body of God. At 1553 it is pushed back before time: he chose me in him before the foundation of the world, so my fitness is not the consequence of anything that I did. The instruction that follows is always the same and always short - let no one frighten you and tell you that you've got to do this and do that and do the other; believe the story, that's all you have to do.
