Right, David, absolutely right. I know the one day I went off to my tailor in New York City…he’s been my tailor now for thirty-five years…and I ordered a few suits, and when I brought them home after they were completed, my wife naturally would look at the suits, and when she saw one she said, “What on earth possessed you when you ordered this suit?” Well, I put myself into the suit, looked at myself before the mirror and I agreed with her…never wore it once. My son was about my size at the time (he’s much bigger now) I said, “Can you use this suit?” “Oh, lovely!”…he wanted a new suit. Well, he took the suit and he just loved it. But when I saw it at home! And I ordered the suit, my tailor didn’t persuade me. I thought, “Well now, I like that suit.” I saw it just in the piece, these are all individual pieces, and when I got it home I didn’t want any part of it. So I never wore it once. So then I had the pleasure of giving it to one who seemed to have enjoyed it. Well, whatever possessed me? Maybe he was treading in the winepress for a suit and I was the means through which he got a suit. It could happen that way. He wanted a suit, he assumed that he had a suit, his father goes and buys one he wouldn’t wear to a dog fight, and then he wants that suit. So he got it. You never can tell how these things work. I could give you a story…and I think I’ve told it before. This lady in New York City and she was a lady of the evening, and so I could discuss all kinds of things with her. She met me at the corner of Broadway and 72nd Street one night, and she said to me, “Neville, you said that whatever I desire I can have. Well, I would like a new hat.” I said, “Alright, imagine that you have the hat.” About ten days later or two weeks later, I ran into Ann again and she said, “Now, Neville, I have the hat…see I’m wearing it…but why didn’t God give me the money to buy the hat?” Then she told me the story. She said, “I walked up the street and I saw this hat in the window and I closed my eyes and assumed I was wearing it. Then I walked further up. On my way back I would not look into the window to become disillusioned that the hat was in the window as I thought I had it on my head. So I went home wearing this hat, all in my Imagination. When I got home, I wouldn’t even look into the mirror. I took off the hat, wouldn’t look at it, and put it up as my hat. The next day the old hat is still there, so I put on the old hat. “Several days later a friend of mine called me, said she would like to see me if I had the time, so I went up and saw her. She said, “Ann, I have something for you. I know it’s going to look lovely on you. I bought it and I wondered why I bought it. I can’t wear it.” She brought out not a hat but the hat. Ann put the hat on and she loved it. But Ann’s problem was this, “Why didn’t God give me the money to buy the hat instead of giving it to me this way?” So knowing her profession and the uncertainty of the profession, I said, “Ann, tell me, do you owe any rent? Bet you owe two weeks rent.” She said, “I do, exactly two weeks.” I said, “Maybe you pay $17.50 a week?” “That’s exactly what I pay,” she said. “Well, you owe $35.00 rent. Now what price hats do you usually buy?” “Oh,” she said, “$3.00, 3.50.” I said, “What did this hat cost?” She said, “$18.” I said, “Have you ever bought an $18 hat?” She said, “Never.” I said, “Now tell me, how much money would you really have to have to buy an $18 hat? You owe $35 in rent. If you found a hundred dollar bill while you’re looking at the hat, you wouldn’t have bought it. Know what you would have done? You’d have gone in and paid your two weeks rent and possibly put down another week in advance or two weeks in advance to feel a little secure, and you would not with the remaining money come out and buy that hat.” She said, “You’re right…but you’re too nosey.” So how could God give her the hat by giving her money? She never would have bought the hat…she wasn’t in the habit. I’ll tell you, in New York City I’ll go to Tiffany’s to buy a present, say for a wedding or an engagement or an anniversary. I get a far better present, beautifully wrapped than I would at Macy’s and at Macy’s it would cost more. But people will pass by Tiffany because it has the reputation of being at the very top in quality, and they wouldn’t dream of going in…they feel embarrassed. They wouldn’t go in and look at this beautiful display of merchandise, they feel embarrassed. But they feel at home in Macy’s or in Gimbel’s and go into Gimbel’s and spend more than you would at Tiffany, and when it comes it’s a Macy’s package and not a Tiffany package. But I’ve gone to Tiffany time and again and bought eight glasses, beautiful glasses, different kinds of glasses (it’s a good present) and bought them at a modest price. A similar glass would be twice the price at Macy’s, but people feel at home going to Macy’s and they feel ill at ease going to Tiffany. So if you never bought an $18 hat and you always bought $3 hats, I’d have to give you $2,000 to buy an $18 hat. God knew exactly what she needed. She wanted a hat and so he got someone to buy the hat who didn’t want the hat and then gave it to her. And that’s how it worked.769 ¶42
