Visiting London in 1925, Neville met an old Scotsman who told him that his attitude of mind determined his life — that he need not be enslaved by life but could control his future by his present thinking. Neville describes being intrigued, and fascinated that in spite of his limited education and background he could transcend his environment. Seeing his interest, the Scotsman gave him some twenty or thirty books, which Neville read from cover to cover, 'hungry for the knowledge I found there'.
