I Remember When

When one receives a great revelation concerning the creative power of God, they cannot keep it to themselves. I do not believe that many of you ever heard this before, for it came to me many years ago. If you did hear it, hear it for the second time, and I’m quite sure you were not taking recordings of the talks. I do not think you have it on tape. But it is truly a great revelation concerning how to create in this wonderful world of ours. Many years ago I found myself in spirit in the interior of one of the great mansions on 5th Avenue in New York City, the mansions that lined the avenue at the turn of the century. These were enormous mansions. There were still a few left when I arrived in New York in 1922, with their stables a block or two blocks away between 6th and 7th…all these were down 5th Avenue. All the great financial giants, the social giants, lived in these enormous homes with full complements of servants. So here I am in the place, but I am invisible to those who are present. I am fully awake and fully alert, and there are three generations present. The oldest generation, grandfather, is invisible, but his presence permeates the entire house. The second generation, the son of this grandfather, is telling his children the story of grandfather. And this is what he said, “Your grandfather would stand on an empty lot and say, ‘I remember when this was an empty lot,’ and then he would paint a word picture of his desire for that lot so vividly that those who heard him could see it rise before their eyes.” It was this grandfather who made the fortune and left it to his children and then their children. They enjoyed this fabulous way of living because of the visions of grandfather.433 ¶1

Well, I woke and I wrote it down, and then went back to bed and I re-dreamed the dream, only with this change in it, I was the grandfather and I told the story to those, not my children or grandchildren. I told the story to those who were present. I told them that I remember when this was an empty lot and I painted it so vividly that the very stones molded themselves into the structure of that which I painted. Now here is a principle. You can use it in the most destructive way in the world or in the most constructive way.433 ¶2

You can say, I remember when this was a glorious building and look at the rubble, and remain aware of the rubble where once stood a glorious building. Or you can stand on rubble and say, I remember when it was rubble and paint your word picture in your mind’s eye of a glorious building and bring the rubble into this glorious building. You can say, I remember when he had nothing, which would imply that now he has something. You can say, I remember when he had much, which would imply that now he has little or nothing. You can say, I remember when he was a healthy, strong, handsome, wonderful person. That would imply he no longer expresses this state. You can say, I remember when he was weak and unknown and disheveled, for that would imply he is no longer unknown and disheveled. So you see what power is in this revelation. It’s entirely up to man to select what he wants to do. But man is the operant power. He makes the decision, and is responsible for his decision, and then he becomes the operant power. So there is no limit to what you can do.433 ¶3

This was revealed, as told us in the 12th chapter of the Book of Numbers: “If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto him in a vision and I will speak with him in a dream” . You may ask, are you a prophet? The prophet of scripture is not one who tells you your fortune; the prophet reveals the word of God, and the true prophet fulfills it. So, yes, I have answered in the affirmative, I am. Not one who looked into a crystal ball to tell you anything, or any teacup leaves or cards or astrology, no; but I am in the sense that I have fulfilled scripture. In scripture the central figure is called the prophet. So he does not come save to fulfill scripture. But now these are revelations…not everything is recorded in scripture. We’re told in the end of John, if everything that he did was written, the world itself would not be big enough to hold the books. Now, that’s an exaggerated statement.433 ¶4

But all these are expressions concerning how to create. Here, what more simple way of telling it to man, that having nothing you stand on nothing, and then you can say, “I remember when I had nothing.” Well, that statement in itself would imply that that no longer exists. I remember when I had nothing. I remember when no one knew me. I remember when I couldn’t sell a book. I remember when I couldn’t sell anything that I wrote. I remember when I couldn’t…and you just go on naming and naming. I remember when…well, that statement in itself implies [...]. That’s the one theme that came through, and then I went back to bed, re-dreamed it, as the central figure. But I was telling the story now, “I remember when…” standing on nothing and then painting this fabulous structure, everything becoming molded into it as though it became their dream. Then I woke and here comes the second…which means the dream is affirmed. So the affirmation of a dream means it is done, it’s fixed by the Lord, as told us in the 41st chapter of the Book of Genesis . And the doubling of the dream means the thing has been fixed, it’s established—that’s law.433 ¶5

So I tell it to you now and share it with you, so you can take anything in this world and put yourself into a mood “I remember when…” and just go right through. Trust it implicitly, because it’s all your own wonderful human Imagination. That’s the creative power of God; there is no other creative power. It’s called in scripture Jesus Christ.433 ¶6

So when people say, Jesus Christ is coming again, why, Jesus Christ has never left me and can never leave me. How could he ever return? How could he ever return when he has never left me and can never leave me? Listen to the words, “Lo, I am with you always, to the end of the age” . So how on earth can I look for his return if I know you’re told in scripture this Jesus that was taken up from you shall come in the same manner as he went into heaven? He was taken up into heaven and he will come in the same manner as he was taken into heaven. Well, where is he? “The kingdom of God is within you” is what we are told when the Pharisee said, “Where is heaven?” The kingdom of God is within you, really within you. So it’s right within you. Well, if it’s within you, well, he can’t come from without. How then will he really come? For now he seems to be invisible…my Imagination seems to be invisible. Well, he’ll come…but he’s never left me…for I can’t detach myself from my imagining, I can’t do it. So then he will come. But how will he come?—when he awakens within you.433 ¶7

How do I know that he really came? Listen to the words carefully, these are the 8th of John: “If you continue in my word, you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” . Then comes the discussion, “But we are free, we are the sons of Abraham…we have never known bondage.” He said to them, “He who commits sin is a slave of sin.” He who commits sin—we were taught to believe that if you did something wrong, no—you are missing the mark in life. Anyone who is missing the mark has not quite discovered how to move from the state in which they find themselves into the state where they cannot miss their mark. They simply become one with the state that they desire to realize. So if I can’t move out of one state into the state desired, I am committing sin…I am missing the mark regardless of what I claim about my freedom. For freedom now is the issue. “We have never known bondage.” Then he said, “If the Son makes you free, you are free indeed” ; but only if the Son makes you free…only when that Son stands before you. And no word need be said, but is said. It need not be said, any more than when your own child coming through the door need call you Father every time he comes through the door. It’s so obvious that he’s your child, and it’s so obvious to you that you are his father that words need not be said. But strangely enough, in this drama they are. But they need not be said; this wonderful relationship that is now established always has been. So when he sets you free, you are free indeed.433 ¶8

Now, in Christ is the original principle of movement, because Christ is the creative power of God, and the beginning of Creation is, “And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the deep” . Now motion cannot be detected save by a change of position relative to another object. Unless there is some fixed reference against which an object moves, you can’t say the object moved. Well now, here is the object, waste land, and now I say, “I remember when.” When I can conjure in my mind’s eye something entirely different from that which I remembered concerning this state, then I must have moved. I move relative to that waste land and that was an empty lot. I remember when. Everyone says, “Oh, he can’t last more than another month…he looks like the last month of shad.” You’re told it, and look into yourself, too, “I remember when” and then you begin to resurrect from that state. All things return that seemingly you can’t arrest, but “I remember when,” and you do this within yourself. It’s all within your own wonderful human Imagination. There is nothing but Christ and Christ is your own wonderful human Imagination. That’s God, the only God, God the Father. God the Father and God the creative power are one and the same. The same being, therefore, he’s never left me. I go to bed tonight and dream the most horrible dream. It takes my Imagination to do it, so he hasn’t left me. When I wake in the morning with memory of it, it’s the same being that the world honors, as they should, this same creative power, the one who took me through the furnaces of a horrible nightmare. Then they get fewer and fewer and fewer, and you completely awake, and you are in control of your own wonderful creative power. You go in and you see the whole world is yourself.433 ¶9

This past night, I had the most heavenly night. Not the most comforting as far as being relaxing at the end of the day, but my whole night was one of meeting all of my friends who are here and those who are gone. My brother Lawrence, here is Lawrence, my brother the doctor, who died not quite two years ago. I said, “Lawrence, you look remarkably well.” He said, “I feel it too.” Young, in his twenties, he said, “Come join me, I’m going to the beach, going for a swim.” Here is Lawrence…he’s one year and a half my junior and he looks about twenty-five, going to the beach for a swim. Not a thing in this world is more real than what I encountered last night…all of my friends. All those who are gone from this sphere are young, much younger, healthy, wholesome, going through the same things they did here—loving, liking, disliking, yes, even hating, indifference. The same people, only they are restored and they are young, with the same problems that we have here. Yet I knew exactly what I am doing. Lawrence was not aware of the fact that I had not yet joined him by going through that little gate the world calls death. I was fully aware that I had already “died” and I’m among them as a spirit but physical to them and communicating with all of them. I couldn’t close my eyes before the whole thing started all over again, and that was my whole, whole night. Seven hours of just living in this world. It’s not what the world calls this world, and yet it is this world.433 ¶10

Now, when we begin to have scripture really unfold within us…listen to the words again…the 14th of John, “You heard me say to you, ‘I go away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father; for the Father is greater than I” . That’s seems a contradiction, I and my Father are one, but it’s not a contradiction. In this audience tonight there are three to whom I said it, and they did rejoice. They fulfilled scripture. “I have said to you, ‘I go away, and I will come to you’”…unless I go away I cannot come to you. If you loved me, you would have rejoiced in the depth of your soul. You had to come, therefore, you had to rejoice at the good news of my becoming invisible to you. But I cannot leave you. Becoming invisible certainly is not leaving you—I am nearer now—because I can never leave if I am he. And Christ can never leave us, therefore he cannot return. I told you who I am, therefore, when I do come you will know I told you the truth because you’ll know that you are he. I tell you I am the Father, and I told you the Father dwells in me and I dwell in you and you dwell in me. So when I do come, although I never left you, you will find me within you as yourself, the Father. And this is the unity of our being…there is no other.433 ¶11

So here, in this wonderful world, you take what I told you earlier and put it to the extreme test in this world of Caesar. There is no limit imposed upon this law, none whatsoever. You don’t have to have this sort of background or that sort of background. Simply believe it, that you can stand on anything in this world, a dump, and say to yourself, “I remember when it was a dump.” Well, that right away implies it is no longer a dump, and you build in your mind’s eye exactly what you want to replace what it was, and see it in your mind’s eye as done. Do it in a constructive way. But I must warn you, you can do it destructively. You can take a business that belongs to another and tear it down. People do it. They don’t know it; they do it unwittingly.433 ¶12

Three years ago in Barbados I said to my brother quite innocently and kiddingly, I said, “How is that business doing?” We own a third of it. He said, “It’s doing remarkably well, we’re doing remarkably well, good management, and one who has two-thirds of the business is a good man, honest man, and he’s doing a whale of a job here in the supermarket.” I said, “Are you satisfied?” “Oh yes, I’m satisfied. He’s doing a marvelous job, a good manager, but it’s our business.” He said it quite innocently. My brother Victor, who lived this law, said, “It’s our business.” And so six months ago—I haven’t heard it officially from home, but I got it in the paper—the man who owned the two-thirds asked him to buy him out. He said, “I’m young and only in my thirties and the supermarket the hours are too long, it’s too much of a burden, the money is good, but I want to go into construction, so that when the sun goes down I’m through…and long before the sun goes down I am through. And so we need buildings in Barbados, tourists are coming in, and I see the trend. We need it…hotels, private homes for people coming in for the winter months. And I would like to pull out.” So he bought him out. My brother set the whole thing in motion, didn’t want any partners—set him up in business, gave him two-thirds, and then after ten most successful years he volunteered. No one asked him to sell. So when you offer…you do not often get what you want when you have to sell. That is part of this world of Caesar, and that’s how my brother operates.433 ¶13

So he has done it consciously, but not by revelation…unless my father told him, because my father did it. He stood one day in a huge place, for little Barbados a huge place, he looked out to sea and said to my brother, “You know, Vic, this is an ideal place for buildings, lovely homes and hotels.” It was owned by three sisters, three spinsters, and he just turned to them quite idly and said, “When you want to sell, let me make an offer.” They smiled and said, “Yes, Mr. Goddard.” Well, two died, the third one found it too burdensome to continue. It represented something like fifty acres overlooking the beach. The one who really wanted it, hungrily, happened to be in Brazil the day of the sale and my father bought it.433 ¶14

It seemed to be an idle thought, but it wasn’t idle. If you’re intense, it only takes a second…just one moment of intensity. I can put on a little flame on a pot of water, all day long it still isn’t going to boil….but let me turn it up with an intense flame. He was intense about this just as in my vision the grandfather was intense. He was so intense that he could in words build a picture so vividly that those who listened to him saw in their mind’s eye what he was describing in words, as though the thing were objective to them.433 ¶15

So the key is this, as I stand upon anything in this world, good, bad or indifferent, and it’s not what I want, I want to move to another state, well then, how do I move? Well, “I remember when it was…” or I remember when he was in a certain state. If I remember when he was, then I am saying it isn’t so now. Now, in my mind’s eye…I am building up in my mind’s eye what I want him to be as though it is now present objective fact. Now remain faithful to this imaginal act and the imaginal act will become crystallized in a way that you do not know at the moment. But you will find yourself moving across a series of events leading up to the fulfillment of this state. How it works? I can’t tell you how it’s going to unfold, but it does unfold that way. So you simply remember when he wasn’t well, or she wasn’t well, but now she is well. I remember when she wasn’t so-and-so, but now she is so-and-so. And you go through life this way.433 ¶16

Haven’t you heard it from people in all walks of life, “Well, who does he think he is? I knew him when.” Well now, when they can say that you find a little jealousy in the tone. Because if you remember when he wasn’t anyone, you are now recognizing that he is. And your recognition with your intensity, even of dislike, will push him all the higher. He’ll go higher in the world and you’ll recognize it, too, by your “remembering when” with intensity.433 ¶17

And so, this is something revealed to me many years ago. And the mere fact that I returned to bed and re-dreamed the dream affirmed it and made it principle, the principle. You can’t rub out principle. This is something that everyone can prove.433 ¶18

So I ask you to try it. You know what you want? Now compare it to what you are, and if what you are differs, you want to move from what you are to what you would like to be. Now that is that great motion.433 ¶19

So my friend Bob two years ago had this marvelous experience. “Then how long have I been here?” I said, “Two years”—which is conflict—“through the conflict you were here.” “Did I learn anything?” “Yes, you learned how to move.” The greatest secret of all creation: How to move. So I move relative to something; where if I do not have a frame of reference, I have no knowledge that I’ve moved. So I must have a frame of reference. “I remember when…” that’s the frame of reference. I’ll take all my friends who remember me when…now let them see me when. Then in my mind’s eye move by assuming that I am now what they have never known me to be. I assume that I am it, and then take the same frame of reference and see the expression on their faces. Those who love me would empathize with me, rejoice with me, and those who envy me would show it on their faces. Well then, let them show it. “Let the filthy be filthy still,” that’s what you’re told in scripture…the end of Revelation. Don’t try to change them. If they’d envy you, then let them envy you. That becomes a resisting force against which you move, move out. A bird couldn’t fly without resistance; I couldn’t leave the platform without resistance; you couldn’t drive a car without resistance. So if they want to be that resisting power let them be.433 ¶20

So you take everyone that you know in your present circle and you now see what they believe you to be. Well now, you don’t want that any longer, and you dare to assume you are the one that you really want to be. Use this frame of reference, because you must have a frame of reference against which you move. Look at the same friends and see different expressions; same people but you see them from different angles. Now they’re looking at you and they’re seeing and hearing from you as they never saw you before or heard of you before. That is a change relative to that…just like the empty lot as against the lot that is now bearing a huge wonderful structure.433 ¶21

So this is what was told me so vividly. If he talks to me through the medium of vision and medium of dream, is there anything more important to listen to? Is there any program on our radios, TVs or headlines in papers comparable to the revelation that comes from the depth of your own soul giving you an eternal principle of creation? Nothing in this world is equal to it.433 ¶22

Tonight they are all vying on this level trying to find out where to catch him, because he said something that contradicted what he said yesterday, and then they’ll show it tomorrow night. Those who are now candidates are all looking for little angles to find where he tripped himself up yesterday, and then they’ll come out tomorrow night on the different programs and each is vying on this level. When the [...] is to go to the end. I, personally, wonder why anyone wants the job anyway, but they do and so let them have it. They are all for us to be taking if we really want them.433 ¶23

But you seek first the kingdom of God, and all things will be added. All will be here.433 ¶24

So here, do not let anyone tell you that he’s ever left you. They say he’s going to come again; he can’t possibly return because he never left us. Christ never left man, because Christ is man’s own wonderful human Imagination…that is Christ. There never was another Christ and never will be another. So any Christ other than he who was crucified within us is a false Christ. He is crucified within us, all of us, and he wakens in one, in two, in three, eventually in all; and gathers all together into himself. “One body, one Spirit, one Lord, one God and Father of all” . That’s the great mystery; how he does it. I tell you, I know from experience that’s how he does it, only one body, and yet you do not lose your identity. No loss of identity and yet one body, one Spirit, one Lord, one God and Father433 ¶25

Now, a friend of mine writes me this letter. She said, “I have no consciousness of a dream whatsoever, none. I woke in the morning and on my note pad I saw the words ‘Neville, surgeon, operation,’ and remembering our friend Marta who had that similar experience she wondered if it could be the same thing. Let me tell you, yes, it is the same thing, the identical thing, and your dream that followed confirms it.”433 ¶26

The dream that followed was this, she found herself in the sea and there was a pole driven into the sea. The water would surge and she knew that she had to hold that pole driven into the sea as it surged toward her and raged around. So she held it with the right hand and went around and around it. The pole seemed to have grooves, like a screw. A friend of hers, who has with her in the water, said to her, “You only have to go around two times more.” And here would come the sea, the surging sea, and she would hold the pole and around it she would go. Then she said, “You have to make your own rules. Now we can go.” So they left the sea, she took the pole with her, and took it to her home. When she got there, she left it in the home and went out into the back. Now, what she saw is irrelevant to the dream like the buildings of Chicago and so on…that’s irrelevant, all part of the structure of God within her building a drama. Then she turned and she sees a little child in a bubble bath. She goes over and she picks him up. She uses the masculine pronoun, “she picks him up.” And as she held him in her hands, a girl entered and said, “His father’s name is Robert.” Then she woke. “Well, what on earth can this mean if anything? Could it have any significance?” It has tremendous significance.433 ¶27

In the 10th chapter of the Book of Isaiah, “And his rod will be over the sea and he will lift it as he lifted it in Egypt” . When the rod is lifted up in Egypt, the serpent goes up, and it has to go up the roots, just like a serpent climbing. Now go forward just a few verses into the first verse of the 11th chapter, “And there shall come forth a rod out of Jesse, and a branch will grow out of his stem: And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him.” Well, these are the words, although quoted from the 61st of Isaiah, these are the first words spoken of Christ Jesus when he begins his ministry in the Book of Luke: “And the Spirit of the Lord God is upon me.” So he’s identifying with the rod…so the Father of the child is the creative power of God, the rod Jesus Christ. For there’s no other Father, really…there can’t be any other Father. So I would say to you, yes, my dear. The same thing that happened to Marta has happened to you, and you had confirmation with this rod—“And his rod will be over the sea.”433 ¶28

You look up the word rod, instead of what you did look it up. You will find it has many definitions. First of all, it’s for chastening—“I will raise up your son from out of your body…and he shall be my son, and I will be his father. If he commits iniquities, I will chasten him with a rod” . So it’s used for chastening, too. On the other hand, it’s “a scepter of the ruler.” It is also a “walking staff, like the shepherd’s staff”. It is also a “substance of life as bread”—“I am the bread of life” . So, all these belong to the rod. And so you were in the sea…and his rod was over the sea, and then he will lift it up as he did in Egypt. You lifted it up over the sea, and walked home with it. And all the grooves are on it, so therefore this is an adumbration, a forecasting of what is in store for you.433 ¶29

Some are having physical and emotional problems. May tell you, as I told a friend tonight, no one ever promised you that in labor, when you’re bringing forth the greatest thing in the world, everything is going to be easy…don’t expect it. There will be problems…certainly, problems, horrible problems. But, as we’re told in the 16th of John: “When a woman is in travail, she has sorrow; but when the time of delivery is upon her, she forgets everything because of the joy that a child was born” . The child to be born is Christ Jesus, the creative power of God.433 ¶30

So I am not saying to anyone that I can promise you complete easiness [...]. I can give you the law to cushion all kinds of blows, but things are going to happen. You’ll find psychic experiences, mystical experiences, all kinds of things. But, now you have the law. You’re told in scripture, “Whatever you desire, believe you have received it, and you will” . That’s the law. It won’t fail you and there is no limit placed upon the power of belief. What I told you tonight, add to it to augment it. There’s no limit placed upon that. You can stand upon any dump, any size dump, or any fixed structure and do the same in reverse. So it’s entirely up to us how we use these revealed laws of God.433 ¶31

But to tell me that you’re going to conceive the greatest thing in this world, which is the birth of God; for Christ is God, and when you come forth as Christ it is the birth of God…and to tell you the birth is easy? As Blake said, “I’ve traveled through a world of men, a world of men and women too, and heard and saw such dreadful things as cold earth wanderers never knew. For there the Babe is born in joy that was begotten in dire woe; just as we reap in joy the fruit which we in bitter tears did sow.” He was telling exactly what he saw as he traveled through the world of men and women too. When he comes to the end of that marvelous mental journey—for he calls it the Mental Traveller—he ends it on a lovely note that everything is done as I have told. He doesn’t leave anything out…it’s done just as I have told you. For everyone is going to experience it.433 ¶32

And so the birth when it takes place, certainly, you have these peculiar strange things and you think you’re going off your head. But you aren’t going out of your head at all. If I could have shared last night’s experience of mine with all the psychiatrists of the world, they’d say he’s mentally unbalanced, and yet here I’m in complete control of what I’m doing. I go in and out in a split second, know exactly what I’m doing, go right back in contact with the same fellow, do all the things, and they’re living a life just like here; those who are gay and happy here…the same gay and happy ones there, no change whatsoever.433 ¶33

I met a very dear friend of mine who is still on this side in Barbados. He has two perfectly marvelous hotels, a marvelous home, a bachelor, and, well, he’s one of the boys, gay and happy. All those who come home always go to his home. He just loves dropping names, that today Claudette Colbert was here for lunch and Anthony Eden is coming to dinner, and all this nonsense. But he’s a darling, perfectly marvelous fellow. Well, there he was as I’ve never seen him before, but here is the same person. A complete change yet the identical being playing the same part of a gay, light state of his, no change whatsoever, still living on the surface on the cross of [...].433 ¶34

I met them one after the other all through the night, and it was fun until you got tired. You got so tired that you couldn’t even close your eyes. If you close your eyes, back into it you go again. The minute your eyes are closed, right into another world…you aren’t here at all. And so you had to keep your eyes open though you are still sleepy and still tired. So I got up and made myself some tea at five this morning, had a little fruit juice, and then started reading my Bible, because if I closed my eyes I’d go right back into that world. The veil was so thin it just wasn’t even a veil. The lids would close and into it you’d go. And not a thing had died…the same people in the same world, solidly real to that group just like this. My brother Lawrence in his wonderful feeling, “Off to the beach. C’mon join me Nev.” I said, “I didn’t bring my trunks.” He said, “I have other trunks.” I said, “They’re too big for me”…the same thing I would say even if he was much thinner than I am. I would say to him, “Oh, they’re too big for me.” It’s the same dimension, not a thing has changed.433 ¶35

And this could have been prompted by a call from New York City of the parents of the boy who was killed in London and they were beyond themselves, all because they can’t understand why. It could have been my attempt to explain to them that nothing dies that prompted the evening. Larry wasn’t there, but all the others were.433 ¶36

But don’t you forget what I tried to say this night, because it came to me from the depths of my own soul which is God the Father. God the Father is the reality of every being in the world, and he cannot leave you. He’s never left you, therefore, he cannot return. But he does speak from within and when he ever appears, you’re like him. The day will come that he will rise in you and you’ll be like him and he’ll be like you. At that rising in you, all impossibilities will dissolve, because you and he are one, and he is God. So he never left us to go any place.433 ¶37

Listen to the words carefully and you’ll see that he cannot leave us: “I came out from the Father.” Stop it right there. Where is the Father?—in heaven. Where’s heaven?—within . So I came out from within. Within and above are the same in scripture; and without and below are the same in scripture. So “I came out”…now we see he’s a visible being. So “I came into the world. Again I am leaving the world and going”—where—“to the Father,” so I return within . And there’s only one “within.” So where could I go where I would be something that you could see me coming again from without? The next time I come you and I are one…and you will know it. For there’s only one Father and one Son, and my Son is going to call you Father. And you’ll know the truth of what I say now that I am in my Father, my Father is in me, I am in you, and you are in me…we are one.433 ¶38
