A man telephoned Neville the day before yesterday asking him to call their mutual friend Walter, a sixty-two-year-old actor from Vienna who has lost a whole section of his memory after being beaten unconscious; Walter remembered Neville and the film An Affair in Trinidad but nothing since, and Neville reflects that Walter's lifelong gloom, which he could never talk him out of at his New York lectures and home, produced this.
