- Neville Goddard's father-in-law (the father-in-law is mentioned inside a longer sentence about Neville himself)
- Joseph Neville Goddard (his son; the two names differ only by the suffix)
Barbadian writer (1905–1972)
Barbadian writer (1905–1972)
Neville delivered the lecture "God and I Are One" on May 22, 1972, an event attended by Lucille Ball, Rod Serling, and a four-year-old John Reszetylo with his mother.
In the same days-before-death phone call, Neville — in Carter's retrospective reading, announcing his coming death — told Carter the Mrs. Murphy joke about the bottle of Lourdes 'holy water' that turned out to be scotch; Carter did not get it at the time. [Date evidence: a few days before Neville's last dinner party — c. late September 1972] [Place: telephone call]
And he said, do you want to hear my story? I said, yes. He said, Mrs. Murphy went off to Lourdes to see the holy relics, the crutches and the braces. ... So he opened it, he sniffed at it, he tasted it, and he said, Mrs. Murphy, this is not a bottle of holy water. This is a bottle of scotch. She said, down on your knees, man, and pray to the Holy Father. It's another miracle. So that is the way he announced his coming death, by telling a joke. I didn't get it.
Neville (as quoted): "Mrs. Murphy went off to Lourdes to see the holy relics, the crutches and the braces. ... Mrs. Murphy, this is not a bottle of holy water. This is a bottle of scotch. She said, down on your knees, man, and pray to the Holy Father. It's another miracle."
A few days before the final dinner party Carter phoned Neville about a high experience of coming authority; Neville broke in with "it's all a gift, it's all grace" and then told the Mrs. Murphy Lourdes joke (holy water turned scotch — "it's another miracle"), which Carter afterwards understood as Neville announcing his coming demise in the form of a joke, keyed to "relics". [Date evidence: "A few days before our dinner party" — c. 26–29 September 1972]
A few days before our dinner party I called him to tell him that I was having a very very high experience. … I said, “Neville, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that some kind of authority is going to be given to me. I don’t understand it, I certainly didn’t earn it” with that he broke in and he said, “No, it’s all a gift. “It’s all grace. And I said, “Well, that’s my story. And he said, “Do you want to hear my story? And I said, “Yes. … So, I am sure you’re not surprised that he announced his coming demise in the form of a joke.
Neville (as quoted): "No, it’s all a gift. It’s all grace. … Do you want to hear my story? … Mrs Murphy went off to Lourdes to see the Holy Relics … Down on your knees and pray to the Holy father it’s another miracle"
Driving to the hospital on the last day, Carter described an anxious dream from the night before; Neville replied that it was wonderful that the depths of his being had given him a warning. [Date evidence: Neville's last day (died that night, Oct 1972)] [Place: in the car, on the way to the hospital]
So on the way to the hospital I told him about the dream I had the night before, and that I had awakened with great anxiety, and he said to me, It's wonderful that the depths of your being have given you a warning.
Neville (as quoted): "It's wonderful that the depths of your being have given you a warning."
At the dinner party Neville handed Carter the first piece of bread and cheese and poured his own unfinished martini into Carter's glass ('Here, Frank, take this'), then after dinner suddenly stood and said 'We're going' — Carter reads it as an enacted Last Supper. [Date evidence: evening of Neville's last day (died that night, Oct 1972)] [Place: a dinner party at a hostess's home]
he gave me the first piece of bread and cheese. He said, Here, Frank, take this. So I took it, and just before we ate, my hostess asked me if I would like to have another martini. I said, Certainly. And Neville said, Wait. Here, Frank, take this. And he took his unfinished martini and poured it into my glass. So I finished his drink. ... Then after dinner, he suddenly stood up and said, We're going, and with that we left.
Neville (as quoted): "Here, Frank, take this... Wait. Here, Frank, take this... We're going."
On the way to the hospital on his last day, Carter told Neville about an anxiety dream from the night before and Neville called it a warning from the depths of Carter's being. [Date evidence: Neville's last day, 30 September 1972] [Place: in the car en route to the hospital]
So, on the way to the hospital I told him about a dream I’d had the night before and then I had awakened with great great anxiety and he said to me, “It’s wonderful that the depths of your being have given you a warning”.
Neville (as quoted): "It’s wonderful that the depths of your being have given you a warning"
At the dinner party on his last evening Neville handed Carter the first piece of bread and cheese and poured his own unfinished martini into Carter's glass — which Carter read as an enactment of the Last Supper — then abruptly stood after dinner and announced their departure. [Date evidence: evening of 30 September 1972, hours before his death] [Place: a private dinner party]
When we arrived at the party the first thing we wanted was a martini. So, I got mine and he got his and then he gave me the first piece of bread and cheese. He said, “Here Frank, take this” so I took it and then just before we ate my hostess asked me if I would like to have another martini, I said, “Certainly” and Neville said, “Wait. Here Frank, take this” and he took his unfinished martini and poured it into my glass. So, I finished his drink. … Then after dinner he suddenly stood up and he said, “We’re going” and with that we left.
Neville (as quoted): "Here Frank, take this … Wait. Here Frank, take this … We’re going"
A few days before the final dinner party, Carter phoned Neville about a soaring inner experience and a coming authority; Neville broke in: 'No, it's all a gift. It's all grace', then offered to tell his own story. [Date evidence: 'a few days before our dinner party' — late September 1972, days before Neville's death] [Place: by telephone]
A few days before our dinner party, I called him to tell him that I was having a very, very high experience. I couldn't account for it, but that my consciousness was going higher and higher and higher, and I said, Neville, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that some kind of authority is going to be given to me. I don't understand it. I certainly didn't earn it. With that, he broke in and said, No, it's all a gift. It's all grace. And I said, Well, that's my story. And he said, Do you want to hear my story? And I said, Yes.
Neville (as quoted): "No, it's all a gift. It's all grace... Do you want to hear my story?"
On Neville's last day, with Mrs. Goddard very ill in the hospital, Neville chose not to disappoint his dinner-party host and left her in the hospital one more day, with Carter as his driver for the evening. [Date evidence: Neville's last day — the day before he died during the night (Neville died 1 Oct 1972)] [Place: Los Angeles (hospital / en route to a dinner party)]
I spent his last day with him. Mrs. Goddard was very ill at the time. She was in the hospital. Neville was going to a dinner party, and I was going to drive him. Because he didn't want to disappoint his host, he left Mrs. Goddard in the hospital one more day.
Driving to the dinner party, Carter mentioned feeling 'deep in the heart of the woodland' (Blake's word for this world), and Neville sighed and affirmed that he sees the brothers who have not come into the story, those who have come out — 'most exalted beings' — and all three states. [Date evidence: Neville's last evening (30 Sept 1972)] [Place: in the car en route to the dinner party, Los Angeles]
On the way to the party, I told him about my experience downtown and feeling that we were deep in the heart of the woodland. He took a breath and let out a deep sigh and said, yes, and there are those who believe that no one ever returns from the woodland. I said, you mean brothers who haven't come in? And he said, yes. I said, you mean that you see the brothers who have not come into the story? He said, yes, I see them. I said, do you see the ones who have come out? He said, yes, and they are most exalted beings you could ever imagine. I said, well, and you see all three? And he said, yes, I see all three.
Neville (as quoted): "Yes, and there are those who believe that no one ever returns from the woodland. ... Yes, I see them. ... Yes, and they are most exalted beings you could ever imagine. ... Yes, I see all three."
After dinner Neville abruptly stood up, announced he was taking Carter home, and they left; Carter stayed only briefly at Neville's place, neither man drank anything more, and Carter went home and retired early. [Date evidence: the night of Neville's death (30 Sept/1 Oct 1972)] [Place: the dinner party, then Neville's home, Los Angeles]
After dinner, at this last dinner party, he suddenly stood up and he said, we're going. I'm taking you home, Frank. So we left. When we got to his place, I stayed just a short time. Neither one of us had anything else to drink that night. I went home. I retired early.
Neville (as quoted): "We're going. I'm taking you home, Frank."
On the last day Carter spent with Neville, on the way to a party, Carter remarked on the oppressive heat downtown ('deep in the heart of Woodland'), and Neville sighed and spoke of three groups of beings — those who believe no one ever returns, those who are here, and those who have returned, whom he called the most exalted beings imaginable; Carter treats this as Neville's last revelation about his doctrine. [Date evidence: 'the last day that I was with Neville, on the way to the party' — anchors shortly before Neville's death (October 1972)]
the last day that I was with Neville, on the way to the party. He gave a message in an offhand way, which I considered to be his last revelation about his doctrine. ... And I said, Neville, I just got back from downtown, and oh, how deeply are in the heart of Woodland. ... Then Neville took a deep breath and let out a sigh. He said, Yes, and there are those who believe that no one ever returns. And I said, do you see them, the brothers who haven't come in? And he said, yes, I see them. ... And I said, do you see those who have returned? He said, yes, and they are the most exalted beings you can ever imagine.
Neville (as quoted): "Yes, and there are those who believe that no one ever returns. ... Yes, I see them. ... Yes, and they are the most exalted beings you can ever imagine."
The coroner showed Carter the body: Neville lay rigid on his back, arms stretched out, nude with a napkin over his face, a terrible contorted expression as if he had choked to death; the coroner said he had apparently shed every drop of blood in his body — matching, in Carter's eyes, his years-old vision. [Date evidence: the morning after Neville's death (Oct 1972)] [Place: the closed-off part of Neville's home]
there was Neville lying on his back in a rigid position, with his arms stretched out like this, nude with a napkin over his face, and the coroner said, We don't understand all the blood, see? And with that he reached down and picked up the napkin and showed me, and there was the image which I had seen in my dream all those years before. A terrible contorted expression on his face, as if he had choked to death. ... The coroner said apparently he shed every drop of blood in his body
At Neville's home the morning of his death the coroner, puzzled by the quantity of blood, questioned Carter about Neville's drinking and twice showed him the body — rigid on its back, arms outstretched, nude, napkin over a contorted face as if he had choked — saying Neville had apparently shed every drop of blood in his body, which Carter matched to his Judas vision. [Date evidence: morning of 1 October 1972; Carter also says two men in the family of the daughter's friends cleaned up the blood and he told them of his old vision "so that it was on record"] [Place: Neville's home (Los Angeles)]
The coroner kept asking me what had happened, he said, “Was Mr. Goddard a heavy drinker?” … he took me in to the part of the house that was closed off and there was Neville lying on his back in a rigid position with his arms stretched out like this, nude with a napkin over his face, and the coroner said, “We don’t understand all the blood. See?” and with that he reached down and picked up the napkin and showed me and there was the image which I had seen in my dream all those years before. A terrible contorted expression on his face as if he had choked to death. … The coroner said, “Apparently he shed every drop of blood in his body”.
Carter hesitated to tell the dignified Neville the fool-vision, but when he did, Neville's eyes danced with delight because he knew Scripture so thoroughly he recognized himself as the fool. [Date evidence: before Neville's death (pre-Oct 1972) — no firmer anchor]
I hesitated to tell him because you know how dignified he was. But I told him anyway, and his eyes just danced because he knew. He knew Scripture so thoroughly that he knew that he was the fool.
The coroner questioned Carter about Neville's drinking — the daughter interjecting that he had been a heavy drinker a few years earlier but not in recent years — and Carter attested Neville had not even finished his second drink; the coroner said they did not understand all the blood. [Date evidence: the morning after Neville's death (1 Oct 1972)] [Place: Neville's home, Los Angeles]
The coroner questioned me, was Mr. Goddard a heavy drinker? With that, his daughter broke in. She said, he used to be a few years ago, but not in recent years. The coroner asked me again, did he have a lot to drink last night? I said no. Then I suddenly remembered everything that had happened about the drinks, the fact that he didn't even finish his second drink. I said, he didn't even finish his second drink. He gave it to me. Why are you asking me all these questions? The coroner said, we don't understand all the blood.
