In the first, she saw stairways leading in three directions crowded with people in dark modern clothing who did not recognize her, dressed as she was in white flowing Grecian robes and golden slippers, before a similarly robed man appeared approaching from the distance. In the second, she heard a chorus of men singing the Battle Hymn of the Republic while she stood on the rim of a great wheel ringed with singing men; afterward, recalling Neville's teaching that giving what you would like to receive is itself a joy, she imagined giving her friend Jan the feeling of being loved, becoming like the ocean and seeing Jan walking on the water.
