He received a letter last Friday night from a little girl named Maylo, about nine, describing a dream in which her father was being tortured underground by a devil holding a fork with fire on it and a spoon bearing Neville's picture labelled 'Enemy'; Neville appeared carrying her sister, the devil screamed and faded, her mother went to kiss him and he faded, and a voice said he is what others call dead, what others call a spirit, what we call the God in us.

An elderly woman friend of Neville's lived on sunflower seeds like a parrot, collapsed from sheer exhaustion and was picked up dead on the streets of San Francisco.
