A friend of his back east, named Ruth, is descended from the Adams presidential family and named her son Adams; twice he called the boy Adam and twice she corrected him, so proud is she of the ancestry.

A friend of his whose favourite remark was that a sign "didn't say it positively" came aboard a plane at New York City smoking a cigarette and bringing another friend on board to see Neville off, several times.

A woman friend telephoned Neville the morning of the lecture, distressed: she had used her trained ear to hear a man state that he was free of his disturbing neighbours, and within days the neighbours' parents were killed on the highway, leaving three children; Neville told her she had done nothing wrong but should always apply the principle in love.
