He says he has friends who were in the state of John for fifty years and died in it, and cites George Bernard Shaw as one who died in it at ninety, a vegetarian and teetotaler, an atheist.

A woman wrote to Neville describing a dream in which three people dressed in pale blue sat before three plates of three pieces of food each, a voice insisted they were eating 'break food' not breakfast, a man called Bud said a blessing, and she reached so far for the food that she fell off the bed and woke her husband.

Neville recalls that his brother was one of the eight sons who carried their father to the grave.

The same friend enclosed in his letter a vision in which he drove at night, felt he was going to have a baby, stopped at the only lighted house — a night school — and found a baby on his car seat, crying three times "I am a father."

A seamstress and dress designer he knows imagined for seven nights opening an envelope and counting money; on the eighth day a woman offered her a job paying exactly the sum she had counted.

A woman, acting on his teaching, tried on a new hat at Sterns in New York; her own hat was sold in the meantime and the section manager let her keep the new one free.

Ann, a prostitute who attended all his meetings, told him how she imagined wearing an $18 hat she saw on Broadway until a friend gave her that very hat; he then explained to her why the money had not simply come to her.

Neville retells what his old friend and teacher Abdullah told him: raised in strict Judaism and a vegetarian for forty years who had never tasted pork, Abdullah heard a voice ask how he could expect others to take what he gave if he would not eat what they gave, and he broke his fast at a party where, as guest of honour, a whole roasted pig was brought to the table.

Neville recalls a friend of his who was told in a vision to change the comma so that the scripture reads 'Before Abraham, was I am.'

A woman shared a vision in which Neville had died yet returned to lecture as usual, wearing her earthly father's face over his own bone structure while everyone called him the Father; she was fond of the Book of John and he suggested she read its 10th chapter.

In New York, Neville's friend Tommy, an elderly commercial artist, was in love with a much younger woman named Ritchie who would not see him; Tommy imagined a three-thirty phone call inviting him to lunch, and at that moment Neville woke with the impulse to telephone Ritchie and then Tommy, arranging a luncheon at the Club which Tommy hosted and Neville paid for.

Ritchie eventually married a younger man, had two children, and the family are now in Thailand with the State Department.
