He recalls a cardinal who developed a clot in his right arm on his way to Rome for the Ecumenical Conference, had the arm amputated, and got special permission from the Pope to conduct the Mass with the left hand.

A friend told Neville of a fantastic vision in which he asked whether he had learned anything; Neville told him he had learned how to move, and the vision transformed into a hovel becoming a castle and a battlefield becoming a sea of ripened wheat as the friend was escorted into his eternal home.

Neville's wife had a vision in a grove of trees where two women each brought a book to an altar and read aloud, one on the credence of faith and forgiveness of sins according to Judaism and one according to Christianity, and she realised it was infinitely more difficult to be a Christian than a Jew and that the whole thing was psychological.

A woman friend told Neville that when she was a child her father used to say that if you have but a dollar and must spend it, spend it as though it were a dry leaf and you the owner of a boundless forest.

Neville reads a letter from a man who dreamed of a young golden-curled man whose skull was being opened and found hollow and plastic, and who, seen from the front in a desert, proved to be only a mask whose wearer could not be seen.

A friend told Neville how she overcame a gossiping neighbour by imagining she loved her, dreamed the woman came as a goddess-like figure to say goodbye, and the next day the neighbour called to say she had given her notice and was leaving.

A woman related to Neville a dream in which she crossed a burning desert on foot with her sister, mother, brother-in-law and first husband, found her Father at the journey's end, and on the return fell so in love with her first husband that he grew young again.

Neville reads a letter from a gentleman who saw a young man of about 26 with golden curls sunk into the ground, two men working at the back of his skull, and discovered the skull was an empty mask of clay or plastic resting its chin on desert sand; Neville later answers this correspondent directly as 'my friend'.

Neville reads and then re-tells a letter from a very dear friend who woke at six in the morning, heard a thunderous inner voice declaring "I AM GOD! I AM SELF-CONTAINED! I AM SELF SUFFICIENT!", fell asleep and found himself in an infinite desert where he threw golf balls that instantly created homes, a putting green and a gate, but could not release the ball over a scene from the past until he persisted, whereupon a dilapidated house became a modern hotel and a decayed streetcar a streamlined bus, and finally transformed sloppily dressed young people on a Miracle Mile-like street into elegant ladies and gentlemen.

Neville says this same friend heard his message years ago and has practiced revision daily ever since.

Neville tells of his wealthy friend Ruth, born poor, who persistently assumed marriage to great wealth, married into it, bore three sons, lived unhappily for twenty-odd years, and now in her seventies wants only more diamonds and no word about David; she dines with him in New York wearing half a million dollars in jewellery and attends every New York meeting.

A woman friend sent Neville a series of four consecutive nightly dreams — finding a watch called a treasure in a paper bag, moving as if on wheels, following him to his lectures into an ivy-covered building, and finally entering a white house her father had built where Neville taught her alone and announced “My name is Friday,” which she answered means “O my darling.”

A gentleman who had only recently begun attending Neville's lectures dreamed he peeled the skin off his head down to his neck and saw he was generating light from within while the outside was dark; later, falling asleep while listening to a taped lecture of Neville's, he was woken by two terrific blows on the right side of his head and saw an extended index finger of a right hand.

An advertiser who had heard him lecture wrote describing how he built an ad campaign purely from the wish fulfilled, persuaded a board of twenty-four men to accept it, and produced a $75 million net increase in three months; the man is in the audience tonight.

His brother in Barbados grows steadily richer in finance by sleeping in his dreams and cannot understand Neville's indifference to money.

His friend David, who teaches at U.C.L.A., drove him to the lecture and recounted the answer he had thought of for students campaigning against the war — that war is a grade in the schoolroom of man that cannot simply be rubbed out.

A woman named Sharon wrote him a letter describing a series of dreams in which she followed him from city to city and village to village — including a campus where a young man sat beside him — and finally he brought her into the Father's house, a white house of many empty rooms, where he told her his name was Friday and she instantly understood it meant "O my darling"; she named three women and then "others", matching Luke 8:1-3.

His friend Grace Griffith, in a moment of distress while looking at the TV, closed her eyes struggling to remember what Neville had said, and then from the deep came the words "Do not be disturbed…I am with you to the ends of the age" — scripture she was quoting without knowing it.

His penniless brother Victor imagined for two years that the family name J. N. Goddard and Sons stood on a Barbados building's marquee instead of F. N. Roach & Co.; on the day of its sale an acquaintance offered to buy it for them on their signature alone, and they bought it for $50,000 in 1924 and sold it to a bank for $850,000.

A seamstress-designer who wanted exactly $100 clear imagined tearing open a pay envelope and counting out the money; that same week a stranger phoned her hotel lobby and offered her a job paying to the penny what she had counted.
