Neville recalls counseling a woman in New York, a few years before this telling, who was the intimate companion of an elderly, immensely wealthy bachelor but had almost nothing of her own. He urged her to claim security for herself using the law; each morning in her bath she would repeat, compulsively rather than in a fully dramatized scene, 'Something wonderful is happening to me now.'
