Hungry to find someone else who had had the same experience, he found a twenty-two-year-old adopted boy in San Francisco who had just had it, but the boy quarrelled with his parents and vanished before Neville could learn the later phase; later his friend Bob Crutcher, then Christine, then Benny had the experience too.

Neville wrote Sam's story in one of his books and gave him a copy; on later visits he found the book put on a top shelf out of reach and then out of sight altogether, because as a Harvard man Sam could not believe a man with no college education had helped him.

Neville describes his continuing close friendship with Sam - they have never once spoken of the principle since, and Sam says grace by rote at dinner - and reports that when questioned Sam told him he imagined every night no matter how tired or disillusioned he was.

The boy who shines Neville's shoes tells him about going to church on Sunday and dining with friends afterwards, and whenever he asks a question Neville tries to tell him who Jesus Christ really is - without success so far.

He says his aunt Maude loved his father only for the large monthly check he sent her; his father drank like a fish while she never drank in her life, and after his death he had arranged for the family to continue the payments.

Neville suggests the night's visions may have been prompted by a telephone call from New York City from the parents of a boy killed in London, whom he had tried to comfort by explaining that nothing dies.

A woman friend wrote to Neville that she woke with no memory of a dream but found the words ‘Neville, surgeon, operation’ on her note pad, as their friend Marta had experienced; a later dream of holding a grooved pole in a surging sea and carrying it home, then lifting a child in a bubble bath whose father was named Robert, which Neville interprets as the rod of Isaiah.

Neville tells how his father, at the end, heard a vision and told Neville's brothers 'I'm going today' — and he did.

A woman in tonight's audience told him a vision in which she boarded a long train, rose through a dark cavern into a world of pinnacles, was called 'babe' by a great being seated in a tall chair, was told to 'Record it', and then heard that being describe Neville in endearing terms and say 'He is my resurrection.'

Another woman present tonight told him a dream in which two people, one of them recognised but startlingly pale and thin, asked her 'How far is it?' and she answered that for her it was only thirty minutes away.

A woman told him she had never wanted things, that on first hearing him she knew this was the truth she was seeking, and that she has worked, served, and trained her two children to serve and love.

A woman present tonight, not yet twenty-eight, told him her memory returned of another age in which he taught her of a Father and a Son with the same face and voice, though she did not understand him then.

A friend sent Neville's book to Fawcett, then in his nineties and a philosopher who had taught at Oxford, and to a physicist; the physicist called it unprovable trash while Fawcett wrote that the chapter on revision could only have come from the Brothers.

A woman wrote to Neville that she found herself awake in a huge domed room she knew to be her skull, aware of the immensity of space, and afterwards the world looked like mechanised dolls in a doll house.

A woman told Neville a series of visions - passing Point Conception thirty miles back, hearing a voice call 'Father', seeing an infant and a youth when she cupped her eyes, and embracing a criminal who turned out to be a long-dead friend - and Neville interpreted the thirty miles as thirty years and told her her birth from above was imminent.

Another woman told Neville a vision in which she held an elongated box, knew she was inside it, and heard her own voice say she was Joseph and could not get out until he became Jesus; Neville read it as the coffin in Egypt at the end of Genesis.

Neville tells of a friend who wrote to him about his experiences, and of a lady who was cursed by an invisible voice which, when she asked why, replied 'Because I want you.'

The same woman told Neville a further vision: half asleep, she looked through (not with) her right eye, saw a quarter-inch figure of Jesus Christ in a white robe, then three figures, then a woman surrounded by them with one presenting a child, which she took to be Mary receiving the Christ child; each of the men announced “I am a man.” Neville tells her to read Blake's Vision of the Last Judgment and Deuteronomy 32 and Amos 7.
